INLAYS & ONLAYS

Inlays and Onlays are comprehensive dental restorations that help restore the form and function of the smile. They are placed when the restoration requires more than the results of a dental filling but less of a dental crown. Inlays or Onlays are either made of Gold, Porcelain, or a biocompatible material that resolves the issues of damaged teeth.

What is an Inlay?

An inlay is a dental filling that is mold into the grooves of the tooth. Inlays don’t extend to the cusp of teeth. With the help of biocompatible materials, the tooth is restored to its proper form and function. The procedure would involve creating a small hole in the center of the tooth and the cavity is cleaned out. Inlays can be of either Gold, Porcelain, or resin material. Inlays help preserve teeth that have suffered either from a traumatic injury or from dental cavities. Dental Inlays are more durable and preserve teeth aesthetics.

What is an Onlay?

An Onlay helps preserves teeth that has suffered from injury to its cusp. The onlay provides a shield of protection to the biting surface of teeth. Getting an onlay will involve removing and cleaning the decayed cavity from the tooth’s surface and insert a temporary onlay. Once the permanent onlays are ready, the dentist would carefully insert them in place restoring teeth to its full function.

The difference between Onlays and Inlays

Onlays and Inlays offer a substitute method to regular dental fillings. They are normally sturdier and longer lasting than regular fillings. Inlays fit in a cavity in the tooth whereas on lays fit on top of the tooth and take its shape and size. The tooth is primed in the same method for inlays and on lays as it is done for a dental filling. Onlays and Inlays are generally more expensive compared to conventional fillings, as they don’t wear that easily.
